The social and cultural events have been arranged to entertain our conference guests and their family and friends who accompany them.

Opening Ceremony

Sunday, June 10, 2007, Ceremony: 18:00-20:00; Reception to follow

No charge for Conference Registrants; Others $60+GST

Canada 2007 will open at the main conference venue. The evening will begin with a welcome to the land by a local Indigenous person. An important element of this conference is a focus on Indigenous peoples’ health, and as such the evening will incorporate a variety of Indigenous entertainment. This event will feature an appearance by the award-winning Canadian Inuit singer Susan Aglukark. Interspersed with the entertainment will be speakers who will introduce many of the topics at issue during Canada 2007. Stephen Lewis, former UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa will inspire delegates with a keynote speech. A catered reception will follow immediately after the Opening Ceremony, providing delegates with an initial opportunity to connect and reconnect with friends and colleagues.

Indigenous Peoples' Night

Monday, 11 June, 2007 18:00-21:00

Museum of Anthropology, University of British Columbia

Hosted by the Indigenous Program Committee, this casual evening event will be a celebration of Indigenous culture in Canada and internationally. It will include barbequed salmon and a wide variety of finger foods made from traditional West Coast ingredients. There will be entertainment and cultural sharing by Canadian Indigenous artists and access to the exhibits at the Museum of Anthropology, world renowned for its First Nation Northwest Coast collection. Out of respect for the nature of the event, and in the interest of healthy role modeling, this event will be alcohol free.

The Museum of Anthropology is located in beautiful natural surroundings on Musqueam traditional territory. To fully appreciate this environment, the evening will be a tented outdoor event held on uneven terrain, so guests are encouraged to wear appropriate, casual clothing and footwear. Transportation will be provided to shuttle delegates between the conference venue and the Museum of Anthropology beginning at 1715.

Canada Night: A Celebration of Canada's Contribution to Health Promotion Internationally

This night will be an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the contributions Canada has made in the field of health promotion, as well as to recognize the contribution of specific individuals and groups in this area. It will be an occasion to reflect on both the history and future of health promotion in Canada while contemplating the situation at present. It will begin with an opportunity to mingle over a glass of wine and appetizers. Hosted by the Canadian Consortium for Health Promotion Research, the evening will culminate in a book launch of an exciting new book on health promotion in Canada.

World Party Reception and Dance

A social evening beginning with drinks and a spread of multicultural food. Live bands will provide the impetus for fun and dancing into the night!

Closing Ceremony and Reception

No Charge – Open to Conference Registrants Only

The Closing Ceremony will be a time to look to the future of health promotion. Speakers will address this topic from a variety of perspectives, including from that of the WHO, Canada, the developing world and internationally. The Co-Chairs will announce the host city of the 20th World Conference. The Closing Ceremony will be followed by a catered farewell reception.
